A camper asked me to email him directions on how to get a program called Banned Story running on his PC. I decided I would post them up on here, as well as how to properly use it.
What is Banned Story?
Banned Story is a character creation tool for an MMORPG called “Maple Story”. However, at camp, we utilize it as a tool for creating custom characters for our own Game Maker created video games.
How do I get it?
Step 1: Install Adobe Air.
Adobe Air (Adobe Integrated Runtime) is a program that allows internet applications to be used offline, and is necessary for installing Banned Story. Just click on the following link, and install the application.
Step 2: Register at mapleanime.com.
To download the program you need to be registered for the site. So far they haven’t spammed me so it doesn’t seem to be that big a deal.

Step 3: Download/Install Banned Story
Once logged in to mapleanime.com, go to the following link, and scroll down to “Continue to download Banned Story”. Click on that, and download/install.

Once you have it: Saving Sprites
Once you’ve installed the program, here is the easiest way to use your sprites in Game Maker.
Go to File>Save Image. Check the box “specific layer” and choose character layer. Turn off transparency, and make sure you are saving it as a PNG. Use the “white background”.
Important: If you have white in your character, in Game Maker the white will be taken out because you have used a white background. An easy way to fix this is to add a color layer in Banned Story with a color that you haven’t used in your character, then choose “nearest color” instead of “white”.
